The Story Behind Saint Mary’s: How One Moment of Care Created a Legacy
February 10, 2025
For 100 years, Saint Mary’s Regional Health System has been a pillar of healing and service in the Arkansas River Valley. But beyond the hospital walls, new technology, and dedicated staff lies a story rooted in a single act of kindness—one that would shape the future of healthcare in this community for generations to come.
A Moment That Changed Everything
The story begins with Dr. R.L. Smith—fondly known as “Doctor Bob”—who founded Saint Mary’s in 1925 with a vision of providing compassionate, high-quality care to his hometown. But before he ever became a hospital leader, he was a patient himself, facing one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Early in his career, Dr. Smith suffered a serious injury after stepping on a needle. The resulting infection led to the loss of his leg, leaving him in a fight for survival at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock. As he endured pain, uncertainty, and the daunting prospect of rebuilding his life, a nurse named Mary was by his side.
Mary wasn’t just any nurse—she was a beacon of comfort and strength, offering care that extended beyond medical treatment. Her kindness, her encouragement, and her unwavering support made a lasting impression on Dr. Smith. That moment of care changed his life—not just physically, but in a way that would shape his entire future.
When Dr. Smith returned to Russellville to establish a hospital, he knew exactly what to name it—Saint Mary’s, in honor of the nurse who had left such an indelible mark on his heart. Wanting her legacy of compassion to endure, he even included a clause in his will stating that the name Saint Mary’s should never be changed.
A Name That Was Meant to Be
Over the years, many visionary leaders have played a role in growing and shaping Saint Mary’s into the healthcare system it is today. Among them was Dr. Martin Heidgen, who later purchased the hospital and became one of its most innovative and forward-thinking leaders. In an almost poetic turn of fate, Dr. Heidgen’s wife was also named Mary. His daughter, Sue Streett, later reflected that it felt like it was always meant to be—a name born from one act of care, now interwoven into the lives of those who carried its mission forward.
The Power of One Moment
One moment of care.
One act of kindness.
One person who takes the time to make a difference.
Mary could never have known that her compassion toward a single patient would inspire a hospital, a legacy, and nearly a century of healing for an entire community. But she proved that the smallest moments—the ones filled with empathy, reassurance, and human connection—can create a ripple effect that lasts far beyond what we can see.
As Saint Mary’s celebrates its 100th anniversary, it does so in honor of the people who have shaped it, the leaders who have guided it, and the caregivers who continue to uphold its name. And, most of all, it stands as a testament to the idea that one simple act of care can change the course of history.
