iInternal Medicine is a medical specialty that provides prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. As a physician of patients usually 18 and over, they have preventative health in mind, making sure people keep things like their diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure under control.
Doctors of Internal Medicine are also known as Internists. They may be called upon to act as a consultant by other physicians to confer on a diagnosis. They are skilled in managing patient treatment plans for individuals who have multiple disease processes. Care may be given to hospitalized and ambulatory patients. An Internist may choose to focus their practice on general internal medicine, or they may select to train as a sub-specialist in over a dozen different areas of internal medicine. A Cardiologist, for example, is a doctor of internal medicine who sub-specializes in diseases of the heart.
