Celebrating Grover's 101st Birthday at Saint Mary's
July 23, 2024
Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center recently had the honor of celebrating a special milestone with one of its beloved rehabilitation patients, Grover, who turned 101 years old. The celebration was marked by heartfelt moments, laughter and a homemade cake from occupational therapist and clinical coordinator, Kyle Jones.
"Grover has been a pleasure to work with," said Kyle. "He has certainly taught us more than we could ever teach him. His perseverance and kind heart have brightened the day of everyone who has had the privilege of caring for him during his time here at Saint Mary's. While celebrating his 101st birthday, Grover was asked what the secret to a long life is, and in true Grover fashion, he responded, 'Breathing!' Grover reminds us all that each day is a new opportunity to make someone smile and even when you may have a setback, just keep breathing."
Kelcie Heflin, our rehabilitation director, came in on her day off with her children to wish Grover a happy birthday. She fondly recalled her first interaction with him: "When he was admitted to the hospital, I asked him the normal orientation questions we ask everyone, and he said, 'Hun, I still have all my marbles.' He’s adorable and he’s been the sweetest! Kind to everyone!"
Grover's 101st birthday celebration was a testament to the strong bonds formed between our staff and patients, highlighting the compassionate care and personal connections that define Saint Mary's. His resilience and humor continue to inspire us all, reminding us of the importance of kindness and the simple act of breathing through life's challenges.
